The Hydrokinetic Frontier: Tripura’s New Energy Era

In a significant move to boost renewable energy and ensure uninterrupted power supply, the Tripura government has identified 10 river locations for generating 185 MW of electricity using hydrokinetic turbine technology.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the initiative on January 3 during the bhoomi pujan ceremony of the Super ECBC building in Agartala. He said the project will utilize the natural flow of rivers to meet the state’s growing electricity demand, which has increased as the number of consumers rose from 7.21 lakh before 2018 to 10.57 lakh at present.

Tripura currently provides nearly 24-hour power supply, with peak demand standing at 378 MW and expected to rise to 650 MW by 2031. Rivers identified for the project include Chakmaghat, Maharani, Dumboor, and Feni, with implementation likely to begin next month.

The minister also spoke about solar energy initiatives under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and solar installations on government buildings. Emphasizing sustainability, he said the state aims to adopt advanced technologies, reduce reliance on diminishing gas reserves, and ensure long-term, eco-friendly power generation.
