Limestone Clearances in Jaisalmer Raise Conservation Alarm

The Union Environment Ministry’s expert appraisal committee has recommended environmental clearance for two limestone mining projects in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, operated by Wonder Cement and Dalmia Bharat Green Vision. Wonder Cement will operate in the Parewar SN1 Limestone Block, while Dalmia Bharat Green Vision will manage the Ramgarh Auctioned Block. However, the projects have sparked conservation concerns due to their proximity to the endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB)—one block partially overlaps a designated GIB priority area, and the other lies just over a kilometer away. Full implementation will require strict compliance with environmental safeguards to protect the species and its habitat.
