India-US Sign Landmark Critical Minerals Agreement

India and United States signed a bilateral framework agreement on critical minerals and rare earths on May 26, 2026, aimed at strengthening cooperation across strategic supply chains vital for semiconductors, electric vehicles, clean energy systems and defence technologies.

The agreement was signed during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The framework is focused on enhancing collaboration across the full critical minerals value chain, including mining, processing, recycling and investment in rare earth and strategic mineral resources.

Officials said the agreement aims to support the development of resilient and diversified supply chains amid growing global concerns over excessive dependence on a limited number of suppliers. The initiative is expected to reduce vulnerabilities in sectors such as battery manufacturing, electronics, renewable energy systems and advanced defence production.

The agreement will also promote greater investment cooperation between India and the United States, supporting long-term energy transition objectives and technological advancement in strategic industries.

Authorities noted that the initiative aligns with broader international efforts to secure reliable access to critical raw materials required for future industrial growth and clean energy development.
