Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur on August 17, 2025, in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, the facility is designed to produce 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be blended with natural gas—up to 2% concentration—within Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur. This blended fuel will be delivered to households, CNG stations, and industries through existing natural gas pipelines.
Torrent Group stated that the project represents India’s largest green hydrogen-natural gas blending initiative within the CGD sector. Torrent Gas, which currently operates 32 CNG stations and serves over 12,000 households and 73 industries across Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar, plans further network expansion.
CM Adityanath underscored the state’s green energy ambitions, highlighting a goal to produce one million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, backed by a dedicated state policy to attract investment in the sector.
