Guntur's Water Revolution: ₹330 Crore Project Underway

To address the rising demand for potable water, the Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned a ₹330-crore drinking water project for Guntur under the AMRUT-2 scheme. The initiative will be executed through the Concessionaire Hybrid Annuity Model (CHAM), which reduces the state’s financial burden by enabling the contractor to invest upfront and recover costs over time with interest. The contractor will also operate and maintain the system for 10 years at no extra charge.

According to GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu, the project is designed to meet Guntur’s water needs for the next 20–30 years. A 16-acre site near Gorantla village has been allocated for a new water filtration plant. Presently, Guntur relies on two plants—Takkellapadu (130 MLD capacity) and Sangam Jagarlamudi (13 MLD)—but the effective supply is limited to 100 MLD, while demand ranges between 160 and 200 MLD.

To enhance distribution, an overhead reservoir will be constructed on a nearby hillock, using gravity to supply water to surrounding areas.
