India has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of the country’s first mega greenfield shipyard at Thoothukudi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening domestic shipbuilding capabilities under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
The proposed shipyard is planned with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million gross tonnage and is expected to play a key role in expanding India’s maritime manufacturing ecosystem. The agreement was signed between HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park Tamil Nadu, and Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited.
The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal during the visit of Lee Jae Myung to India. The project forms part of the India–Republic of Korea maritime cooperation initiative known as ‘VOYAGES’ and is expected to serve as the anchor facility for the proposed Thoothukudi Shipbuilding Cluster.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the techno-economic feasibility study for the project has already been completed, while the detailed project report is currently under preparation. The shipyard is expected to generate nearly 15,000 direct jobs and significantly strengthen India’s shipbuilding capacity as the country aims to become one of the world’s top five shipbuilding nations by 2047.
