Reclaiming the Flow: Tamil Nadu’s ₹2,176 Cr Water Mission

In a major push toward sustainable water management, the Government of Tamil Nadu has undertaken over 40,000 water conservation projects during the current financial year under the VB-G RAM G scheme.

The wide-ranging initiative aims to restore groundwater tables and safeguard agricultural water needs through the creation of over 13,000 ponds, the construction of 1,752 check dams, and the transformation of inactive hand pumps into functional recharge shafts. Priority has been accorded to water-stressed regions, including the districts of Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, and Tirupur, as well as key blocks within the Cauvery delta.

Significant headway has already been made, with work at more than 6,000 pond sites approaching completion. Concurrently, a massive community effort involving over 17,000 workers is underway to desilt 19,085 km of village channels, ensuring unobstructed flow to local panchayats. The project is co-funded on a 60:40 Centre-state basis, bolstered by a first-installment grant of ₹2,176 crore from the Central government.
