Pune Plans Massive 'Green Mobility Corridor' Over Mutha Canal

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed converting the alignment of the Mutha right bank canal into a green mobility corridor after the completion of the Khadakwasla–Phursungi underground tunnel project.

The plan envisions developing a dedicated non-motorised transport stretch featuring cycling and walking tracks, with potential provision for a tram or surface rail system to enhance east–west connectivity across Pune. The proposal comes alongside the ongoing underground tunnel project being executed by the state Water Resources Department (WRD), which aims to replace sections of the open canal network and significantly reduce annual water losses from seepage and evaporation, estimated at nearly three TMC.

Once the tunnel becomes operational, a substantial portion of canal land is expected to be freed up for redevelopment. PMC Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur stated that the idea was discussed in a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and is currently at a conceptual stage. The civic body is in coordination with the irrigation department to assess land availability and explore the feasibility of developing a continuous green corridor.

PMC has also requested detailed data on the canal’s dimensions to support planning efforts, while Water Resources Department officials have clarified that no final decision has yet been taken on the proposal.
