Odisha's Bold Move: A Semiconductor CoE at IIIT-BBSR

In a strategic step to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem, the Odisha government has proposed setting up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Semiconductors at IIIT Bhubaneswar. The initiative, supported by the Electronics and Information Technology (E&IT) Department, aims to advance the state's capabilities in semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and high-end skill development.

The move follows a directive from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who emphasized the involvement of IIIT Bhubaneswar in response to growing industry interest fueled by the state’s recent push for an electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

The proposed CoE will serve as a hub for advanced training, innovation, and R&D in semiconductor technologies. The state government will provide both financial and administrative support, and IIIT Bhubaneswar has been tasked with submitting a detailed project proposal by June 30.

Plans also include launching postgraduate diploma and certificate courses in semiconductor technologies starting from the 2026–27 academic year. This initiative will align with and reinforce Odisha’s broader efforts under the O-Chip programme and its Semiconductor Manufacturing and Fabless Policy.
