Modi Unlocks ₹4,900 Cr Development Boom in Tamil Nadu

On July 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure projects worth ₹4,900 crore across Tamil Nadu during an event held in Thoothukudi.

A key highlight was the inauguration of the new 17,340 sq. metre terminal at Thoothukudi Airport, designed in traditional Chettinad-style architecture. With an extended 3,115-metre runway, 21 check-in counters, three aerobridges, 644 seats, and upgraded baggage and security facilities, the terminal has increased its passenger handling capacity from 156 to 1,400 per hour.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated a 306-metre North Cargo Berth at VOC Port, developed at a cost of ₹285 crore. The new berth enhances the port’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and is expected to generate 800 employment opportunities—300 direct and 500 indirect.

Other major projects launched include the ₹2,357 crore four-lane Sethiyathoppu–Chozhapuram highway (50 km) and a ₹200 crore six-lane road upgrade to VOC Port, improving regional connectivity.

In the rail and energy sectors, projects worth ₹1,032 crore were dedicated to enhancing rail infrastructure in the Nagercoil and Tirunelveli regions. Additionally, a ₹548 crore interstate transmission system was launched to evacuate 2,000 MW from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
