Andhra Pradesh Metro: A New Era of Urban Transit Begins

On July 25, 2025, the Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with renowned consultancies TIPSA and SYSTRA to provide design, supervision, and technical support for metro rail projects in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

The MoUs were formalised at the APCRDA office in Vijayawada in the presence of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Dr. P. Narayana. As per the agreements, TIPSA will oversee design and supervision for the Vijayawada Metro, while SYSTRA will support the Visakhapatnam Metro with technical and execution-related assistance.

Minister Narayana highlighted that these metro initiatives are being undertaken in line with the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Project funding will comprise 20% from the Central Government, 20% from the State Government, and 60% through a low-interest loan facilitated by the Centre.

Phase 1 of the Visakhapatnam Metro will span 46.23 km, while Phase 1 of the Vijayawada Metro will cover 35.04 km. To maximise urban space, the plans include double-decker corridors—20 km in Visakhapatnam and 4.7 km in Vijayawada.
