The Tamil Nadu government has announced an investment of ₹100 crore to upgrade tourism infrastructure in Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as part of its efforts to boost tourism in the region.
The initiative forms part of the state’s Tourism Policy 2023, which aims to drive tourism-led economic growth. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin unveiled the plan at the Tamil Nadu Global Tourism Summit 2026, announcing the creation of a Special Area Development Authority for Mamallapuram. The authority will focus on improving basic amenities and developing modern tourism infrastructure to enhance the overall visitor experience.
The investment is expected to significantly strengthen Mamallapuram’s tourism appeal, positioning it as a major destination for both domestic and international travellers.
Over the past five years, the state has invested ₹612 crore in tourism infrastructure development, attracting more than 128.9 crore domestic tourists and 45 lakh foreign visitors. Additionally, the government plans to host Tamil Nadu’s first-ever Tamil Biennale in January 2027, aimed at establishing the state as a global hub for art and cultural tourism.
