The Union and Kerala state governments are collaborating to transform the 24-km Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) canal into a National Heritage and Tourism Waterway to boost tourism in Kuttanad. Designated as National Waterway 8 in 2025, the canal will serve as a feeder route to National Waterway 3. Initial infrastructure work, such as bank protection and hydrographic surveys, has already begun at Pallathuruthy, alongside the sanctioning of high-density polyethylene floating jetties at Vaikom and Alappuzha to support cruise tourism.
