Construction of a state-of-the-art fishing harbour at Vizhinjam is set to begin in October 2025, aiming for completion by 2027.
The ₹271 crore project, approved by the Kerala cabinet in March 2025, will be developed in two phases. Phase 1, valued at ₹146 crore and executed by Adani Vizhinjam Port, includes the construction of a 500-metre fishing berth and associated infrastructure. Phase 2, estimated at ₹125 crore, involves the construction of a 250-metre seaward breakwater at a 45-degree angle. Tenders for this phase will be floated by the Harbour Engineering Department this month.
Construction will be scheduled around the monsoon season to avoid weather-related delays. Authorities have maintained close engagement with the fishing community, including local church representatives and fishermen’s organizations. Consultations held at the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) in Pune have led to design enhancements for improved safety and operational efficiency—though these may increase overall project costs.
Located between the Vizhinjam International Seaport and the existing harbour, the new facility will cater primarily to traditional fishing boats rather than trawlers. It will include international-standard amenities such as a jetty, locker rooms, auction hall, administrative offices, and a canteen.
