India Soars: HAL to Manufacture Key LEAP Engine Parts with Safran

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and French aerospace company Safran Aircraft Engines have signed an agreement to industrialise and manufacture rotating parts for LEAP engines, which power single-aisle civil aircraft. This collaboration strengthens the long-standing partnership between the two companies and aligns with the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative.

The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in October 2023 and a forged parts production contract finalized in February 2024. Under the new deal, HAL will develop capabilities to produce high-precision rotating components, including Inconel parts, supporting the global ramp-up of LEAP engine production.

“We are proud to expand our relationship with Safran and enhance our industrial expertise in advanced forging processes,” said D.K. Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL. “This is a strategic step in supporting India’s growing aerospace sector.”

Safran, which already operates five manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Goa, is deepening its industrial presence in India. A sixth site—an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility dedicated to LEAP engines—is scheduled to open in Hyderabad by the end of 2025.

“This cooperation is a key part of our global sourcing diversification strategy and reflects our commitment to strengthening Safran’s industrial footprint in India,” said Dominique Dupuy, Vice President of Purchasing at Safran Aircraft Engines.
