GlobalFoundries, a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, is setting up a design and testing centre in Kolkata’s Salt Lake IT hub, with the possibility of future semiconductor fabrication operations. The West Bengal government has allocated approximately 19,000 sq. ft. of space at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) IT Park, with 13,000 sq. ft. already handed over to the company.
This initiative aligns with the broader India-U.S. tech cooperation agenda, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, which emphasized deepening bilateral collaboration in high-tech sectors.
In parallel, Santech Global, a U.S.-based innovator in semiconductors and nanoelectronics, has also shown interest in launching operations in Kolkata. The state government is actively working to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem by fostering collaboration among startups, academic institutions, and industry leaders. Plans are underway for joint internship programs between GlobalFoundries and local universities to benefit students and nurture local talent.
A state official noted, “We are in active consultation with GlobalFoundries to ensure full support. Our goal is to contribute to a thriving semiconductor ecosystem in West Bengal, aligned with our shared vision for technological progress.” A dedicated Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy is also being formulated to attract further investments and generate employment opportunities for the region’s youth.
