Gateway Project Gets Green Light: MPCB Clears Rs 229 Cr Jetty

A week after the Supreme Court declined to halt construction, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has granted clearance for the Rs 229-crore passenger jetty and terminal project near Mumbai’s Gateway of India. In a letter to the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the MPCB confirmed its approval, removing a major regulatory obstacle.

Ports Minister Nitesh Rane reaffirmed the state government’s support, saying, "The government is taking firm and definitive steps towards the completion of the project."

Despite official approval, the project has met strong resistance from Colaba residents, who fear it will harm the heritage character of the area and worsen traffic congestion. The Bombay High Court previously declined to issue a stay, and the Supreme Court on May 27 also refused to intervene, noting that the matter is scheduled for a High Court hearing on June 16.

Intended to ease boat traffic at the Gateway, the new jetty will accommodate 20 boats and is expected to be completed in 30 months. It is part of a broader effort to decongest the area and upgrade marine passenger infrastructure.
