Delhi's Infra Boom: ₹24,000 Cr Approved!

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the Centre’s approval of infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore aimed at reducing traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi and surrounding regions. A flagship project among these is a ₹3,500 crore, five-kilometre-long tunnel connecting Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur (on the Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. The tunnel will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

This advanced, six-lane tunnel will consist of two underground tubes with three lanes each, creating a signal-free corridor between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurugram. Construction is expected to commence early next year.

The tunnel will be equipped with modern amenities, including ventilation systems, electromechanical infrastructure, CCTV surveillance, fire safety measures, emergency exits, and cross-passages.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly decongest key roads such as Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and NH-48. It will also improve connectivity between Central and East Delhi and major highways like NH-44, NH-10, NE-5, NH-709B, and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway through the Urban Extension Road and the Dwarka Expressway.

Describing the tunnel as the “foundation for the Delhi of the future,” Gupta said the initiative will greatly enhance the capital’s mobility and infrastructure landscape.
