Mumbai Airport's Grand Takeoff: Adani's ₹17,500 Cr Expansion

The Adani Group has announced plans for over 310 infrastructure projects valued at ₹17,500 crore to significantly expand the capacity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai by March 2029. The goal is to boost the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 6.5 crore (65 million).

Key components of the expansion include:

Reconstruction of Terminal 1: A ₹3,130 crore project scheduled for completion by September 2028.

Expansion of Terminal 2: Increasing capacity from 4 crore to 4.5 crore passengers annually, at a cost of ₹142 crore, targeted for completion by March 2027.

Construction of a new ATC technical block: Estimated at ₹185 crore.

Additional upgrades will raise the airport's peak-hour handling capability to over 52 flight movements. To further improve operational efficiency, MIAL has proposed extending Taxiway M to connect with Runway 27, including the construction of a bridge over the Mithi River. This will be designed to support Code F aircraft such as the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380.

Currently, CSMIA manages up to 44 flights per hour during High-Intensity Runway Operations (HIRO) and 42 during non-HIRO periods. The airport hit a record 5.5 crore passengers in 2024.

With the addition of Navi Mumbai International Airport, the region’s total passenger capacity is projected to reach 11.5 crore by 2029–30.
