Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3: The Orange Line's New Deadline

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has revised the completion timeline for Bengaluru’s Metro Phase 3—popularly known as the Orange Line—to May 2031, a year later than initially planned.

The delay follows design modifications to incorporate double-decker flyovers at key stretches, aimed at mitigating long-term traffic congestion. These changes have led to a projected 5% increase in the project’s overall cost, pushing the estimated budget beyond ₹15,611 crore.

Launched in August 2025, Phase 3 will cover 44.65 km with 31 elevated stations across two major corridors: JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (32.15 km) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere (12.5 km). Construction tenders are expected by November 2025, with ground work likely to begin in late 2025 or early 2026. The project will be executed in eight construction packages over a span of five and a half years.

The Orange Line is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing Bengaluru’s public transit network by connecting with five existing lines—Green, Purple, Blue, Red, and Pink—significantly improving cross-city mobility and multimodal integration.
