Assam to Get India's Second Hydrogen Production Facility

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the development of India’s second hydrogen production facility in Golaghat district, marking a major step in the state’s green energy transition.

Speaking at a press conference in Numaligarh, CM Sarma said, “A significant industrial project is underway in Numaligarh, where a hydrogen plant is being developed. While most vehicles currently run on oil or ethanol, hydrogen is emerging as a viable clean fuel alternative.” He called the project a “major milestone” for Assam, noting that tenders have already been finalised and construction is in progress.

In addition to the hydrogen plant, Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) is also establishing a Dimethyl Ether (DME) production facility in Namrup. The total investment for both projects is estimated between ₹6,000 and ₹7,000 crore.

DME, with a high cetane number of 55–60, serves as a clean-burning diesel alternative and additive. It offers reduced emissions, negligible sulfur content, and lower nitrogen oxide levels—supporting Assam’s broader goals of sustainable and industrial growth.
