A New Era of Power: Hyderabad's ₹13,500 Cr Underground Cable Project

The Telangana government has announced a major infrastructure upgrade to replace 25,000 km of overhead electric lines with underground (UG) cables across the Core Urban Region (CUR), which includes Greater Hyderabad, areas up to the Outer Ring Road, and Bharat Future City.

Spearheaded by the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL), the ₹13,500-crore project aims to enhance public safety, improve power reliability—especially during rains—and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Currently, only 1,300 km of UG cables have been laid.

Adopting Bengaluru’s successful model, the project will use horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology to minimise road excavation and public disruption. The state is exploring multiple financing options, including loans from the Asian Development Bank and support through central government schemes.

The transition to UG cabling is projected to save ₹500 crore annually by reducing transmission losses, electricity theft, and maintenance-related expenses.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and key officials had earlier reviewed Karnataka’s implementation model. The project will require close coordination with municipal utilities and traffic authorities. While officials acknowledge the execution challenges, they emphasize that the project is critical for ensuring long-term reliability, efficiency, and safety of the urban power supply.

Work will be carried out in phases over the next four to five years.
