Revitalizing Kochi: Dredging Kicks Off at Chilavannoor Canal

Dredging operations began on August 27, 2025, in the Chilavannoor Canal as part of the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project—marking a significant step in Kochi’s ongoing canal revitalization.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) plans to remove 65,000 cubic metres of accumulated soil over the next six months to restore natural water flow and reduce flood risks. A KMRL study had earlier identified delays in dredging and the constricted culvert at Subhash Chandra Bose Road as key contributors to monsoon-related flooding.

In response, the Kerala government and Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) approved targeted interventions. The tendering process for culvert reconstruction is nearing completion, and work on the Bund Road Bridge is advancing, with completion expected by December.

Officials stated the dredging will not only mitigate flooding but also reduce water stagnation, curb mosquito breeding, and improve public health. Additionally, Industries Minister P. Rajeeve emphasized the project's potential to enhance water transport connectivity through the canal.

The ₹3,716.10-crore IURWTS project spans six major canals across Kochi, aiming to transform the city’s waterways into sustainable transport and drainage corridors.
