Mizoram is on the brink of a historic milestone with the near-completion of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang rail line, which will connect the state capital Aizawl to India’s national railway network for the first time.
This transformative infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and unlock new economic and social opportunities for the people of Mizoram. Constructed through difficult hilly terrain, the line includes 48 tunnels spanning over 12 km and 142 bridges—both major and minor. Notably, Bridge No. 196, standing at 104 metres, surpasses the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar and ranks as the second-highest pier bridge in Indian Railways.
The project also includes five road overbridges and six underpasses to ensure smooth and uninterrupted transport across the region.
With 95% of physical work completed and 97% of the allocated funds utilised, the Northeast Frontier Railway conducted a successful trial run in May 2025, followed by comprehensive safety inspections in June. Approved by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the route is now cleared for passenger trains to operate at speeds of up to 90 kmph.
