Minister Inaugurates ₹158 Cr Kalyani Water Project

On August 28, 2025, State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim inaugurated a treated surface water supply scheme for Kalyani Municipality, aimed at benefiting 1.64 lakh residents.

The existing Kalyani water project, originally designed with a capacity of 30 million gallons per day (MGD), had also supplied water to surrounding municipalities. However, with those areas now running their own surface water schemes, the newly added 10 MGD augmentation brings the project’s total capacity to 40 MGD—expected to meet Kalyani’s needs for the next 25 years.

Since 2011, 110 new water projects have been launched, a significant leap from only two before that year, Minister Hakim highlighted.

Implemented by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) at an estimated cost of ₹158.30 crore, the project features a 100-lakh gallon/day pump at Chaitanya Doba, a treatment plant in Ward 19 with equal capacity, a 10-lakh gallon underground reservoir in Ward 14, six overhead tanks, and 61 km of pipelines—ensuring equitable distribution. The entire project is state-funded.
