As part of its Yamuna rejuvenation initiative, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has launched the development of new sewage treatment plants (STPs) across outer Delhi. Key projects include a 15 million gallons per day (MGD) STP in Zindpur (Northwest Delhi) and a 17 MGD facility in Mitraon (Southwest Delhi). Seven smaller decentralized STPs (DSTPs) are also planned in Jaffarpur, Kazipur, Galibpur, and Sarangpur.
Currently, Delhi operates 37 STPs across 20 sites, with an installed capacity of 667 MGD. However, only 565 MGD is utilized, leaving a 227 MGD gap that contributes to pollution in drains, water bodies, and the Yamuna.
A senior DJB official stated that the new plants aim to close this treatment gap. Ongoing upgrades include expanding the Yamuna Vihar STP from 25 MGD to 55 MGD at a cost of ₹403 crore, and increasing capacity at Keshopur-1 from 12 MGD to 18 MGD (₹133 crore). Additional enhancements are underway at the Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli, and Okhla plants, collectively costing ₹381 crore for a total capacity of 15 MGD.
