Making Waves: CSL and HBL Team Up to Electrify the High Seas

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has signed a joint venture agreement with HBL Engineering Ltd to develop and commercialize electric mobility and energy storage solutions for the maritime sector.

The collaboration will focus on key technologies including marine-grade batteries, battery management systems (BMS), electric propulsion systems, power electronics, and charging infrastructure. The initiative is designed to cater to both domestic and international markets, aligning with the global shift toward sustainable maritime operations.

CSL noted that the partnership represents a significant step in strengthening India’s capabilities in green shipping. By jointly developing indigenous technologies, the companies aim to reduce import dependence while supporting the industry’s transition to cleaner energy solutions.

Jose VJ, Director (Finance) and Chairman & Managing Director (Additional Charge) at CSL, described the agreement as a “watershed moment,” emphasizing the importance of collaboration with domestic technology partners in building a robust green maritime ecosystem.

He added that the initiative will not only enhance CSL’s capabilities but also enable the broader Indian maritime sector to adopt locally developed energy solutions, supporting compliance with evolving environmental standards.
