Turning Rust into Gold: The ₹3,200 Crore EAF Revolution in Punjab

Tata Steel on March 19 inaugurated its first scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at Hi-Tech Valley in Ludhiana, Punjab, marking a significant step in its transition toward sustainable steelmaking.

Developed with an investment of շուրջ ₹3,200 crore, the plant has an annual production capacity of 0.75 million tonnes. It is engineered to keep carbon dioxide emissions below 0.3 tonnes per tonne of steel, aligning with Tata Steel’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. The facility will operate using nearly 50% renewable energy and relies entirely on steel scrap as raw material, with around 40% sourced from the company’s recycling unit in Rohtak, Haryana.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director T. V. Narendran, along with other senior officials.

This advanced EAF facility positions Tata Steel at the forefront of low-carbon, circular steel production in India, integrating renewable energy, scrap recycling, and modern technology to reduce environmental impact while meeting rising demand for steel.
