India’s Steel Vision 2047: Tripling Capacity to 604 MT

India has unveiled a ambitious draft National Steel Policy, replacing the earlier 2017 framework to lay down a long-term roadmap for the sector's growth. The policy sets a target to nearly triple India's crude steel capacity—from the current ~220 million tonnes (MT) to 604 MT by 2047—to support rapid infrastructure expansion and surging domestic demand.

Under the proposed framework, finished steel demand is projected to scale to 505 MT by 2047, with per capita consumption rising to 302 kg. Crucially, the policy places sustainability at its core, aiming to significantly reduce carbon intensity from 2.54 to 1.54 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel. To drive operational excellence, the roadmap also strongly emphasizes digital transformation, leveraging Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, and autonomous production systems.
