Gateway to Growth: Vizhinjam’s Multimodal Makeover

The Kerala government has approved major logistics infrastructure projects in the vicinity of the Vizhinjam port as part of its strategy to strengthen a port-led industrial and logistics ecosystem.

In-principle approval has been granted for the establishment of multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs) by central public sector undertakings, including the Container Corporation of India (Concor), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), and the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC). Official orders for Concor and CWC were issued last week, while IOCL received approval in January. Memorandums of Understanding with these PSUs are expected to be signed later this month in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. (VISL), the agency managing the transshipment port project, has identified suitable land parcels for the proposed facilities. Concor plans to develop a 25-acre logistics park at Kottukal near the port, while CWC will establish a large warehouse and logistics complex on 50 acres at Amaravila, along the Thiruvananthapuram–Nagercoil railway corridor. IOCL is proposed to be allotted around 20 acres of land close to the port for its infrastructure.
