In a significant engineering achievement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully installed a 48-metre-long steel girder as part of the superstructure for Mumbai Metro Line 4, which will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli.
The complex installation, carried out over two nights, involved positioning four steel girders, each 14 metres tall, above the high-traffic Ghodbunder Road at Kapurbawdi Junction—one of the city's busiest intersections. The operation was executed with precision using 700-tonne and 550-tonne cranes, supported by backup equipment and the coordinated efforts of over 100 engineers and workers. The MMRDA confirmed that this marks the completion of all special steel spans along the corridor.
Metro Line 4, spanning 32.32 km with 32 stations, is a critical east-west connector linking southern-central Mumbai to Thane. With 84.5% of construction completed, the project remains on track for Phase 1 commissioning, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve overall transit efficiency in the region.
This milestone underscores MMRDA’s commitment to delivering complex infrastructure projects with minimal public disruption and maximum safety.
