Cairn's Deepwater Push: Partnership with EMGS to Fast-Track Production

Cairn Oil & Gas, a Vedanta Group company, has entered a strategic partnership with Norway-based Electromagnetic Geoservices (EMGS) to conduct a 3D Controlled Source Electromagnetic (CSEM) survey in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, off India’s East Coast. This initiative supports Cairn’s deepwater exploration campaign in the KGDWHP-2017/1 block.

CSEM is a cutting-edge geophysical technique that maps subsurface resistivity, helping to improve the accuracy of hydrocarbon detection. EMGS, a global leader in marine electromagnetic data acquisition, has extensive experience working with major international oil companies and now brings its expertise to India through this collaboration.

EMGS’s survey vessel, the Atlantic Guardian, is currently acquiring data using the advanced "Deep Blue" source system. The data collection phase will continue for several weeks, followed by detailed processing to generate high-resolution subsurface resistivity models. These will be integrated with reprocessed 3D seismic data to enhance model accuracy and reduce exploration risk.

Hitesh Vaid, CFO of Cairn Oil & Gas, stated, “Through our partnership with EMGS, we will fast track development of the deepwater block in line with our vision to contribute 50 per cent of India’s oil and gas production.”

This collaboration marks Cairn as one of the first Indian operators to deploy 3D CSEM technology. It also builds on the company’s strategic alliance in March 2025 with a global technology firm to accelerate the development of integrated subsea infrastructure for deepwater projects across India.
