A Greener Chapter: BPCL's Hydrogen Plant Marks New Era

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant at the Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, marking a significant step in the company’s transition to cleaner energy. The move aligns with India’s broader decarbonisation goals.

The 5 MW plant, built in a record 15 months, features two advanced electrolysers with a combined output of 1,000 Nm³/hour and a production capacity of 2.14 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. Powered by renewable energy, the facility is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 9,000 tonnes annually.

Hydrogen generated at the plant will be used within the refinery for processes such as hydrocracking and desulphurisation—traditionally dependent on fossil-based hydrogen—thus lowering the carbon intensity of refining operations.

BPCL’s achievement sets a benchmark among India’s public sector oil marketing companies in terms of cost efficiency and execution speed, reinforcing its role in driving the country’s clean energy transition.
