Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata recently announced that East Horizon Pvt Limited will set up a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the Haldia Dock Complex. The two parties have signed a licence agreement for the project, which is expected to involve an investment of around ₹260 crore.
An FSRU is a specialised offshore facility designed to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from carrier vessels, store it in liquid form, and regasify it for supply through onshore pipelines. The planned facility will enhance the port’s LNG handling capacity and support the expansion of cleaner energy infrastructure in eastern India.
While the port has not disclosed the detailed technical specifications or capacity of the project, it highlighted the initiative’s strategic importance. The FSRU is expected to facilitate LNG import, storage, and regasification, thereby strengthening the national gas supply network and supporting the government’s goal of increasing the share of natural gas in India’s overall energy mix.
According to the port authority, the project will promote the use of cleaner fuels, improve energy security, and further strengthen the port’s role in supporting sustainable industrial development in the region.
