Alstom has been awarded a ₹1,218 crore (approximately €135 million) contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for Phase II of the Chennai Metro project. The agreement covers the design, manufacture, supply, testing, and commissioning of 96 Metropolis driverless metro cars. Phase II spans 119 km, including over 76 km of elevated and 43 km of underground tracks across three corridors.
As part of the contract, Alstom will deliver 32 three-car trainsets and provide comprehensive maintenance for 15 years. This includes cleaning services, maintenance of plant and equipment, and obsolescence management. The contract also includes training for CMRL personnel.
In support of the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, the trains will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru and fully manufactured at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. Each trainset will accommodate approximately 900 passengers and feature state-of-the-art safety, energy efficiency, and emergency evacuation systems to ensure reliability and sustainability.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, commented, “We are proud to be selected to manufacture world-class, Made-in-India metro trains that will enhance the commuter experience with an environmentally friendly, safe, and reliable solution.”
Alstom is already producing 108 metro cars for Phase II and has previously delivered 208 cars for Phase I of the Chennai Metro.
