Amphibious Ambition: A ₹500 Crore Boost for Indian Aviation

Amphibian Aerospace Industries and Apogee Aerospace have partnered to introduce the Albatross 2.0 amphibious aircraft in India, with planned investments of up to ₹500 crore towards manufacturing, maintenance, and training infrastructure.

The collaboration is aimed at addressing capability gaps in coastal surveillance, island connectivity, and disaster response operations. The programme begins with a committed order for 15 aircraft, valued at approximately ₹3,500 crore. Designed for multi-role operations, the Albatross 2.0 can replace functions currently performed by fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and naval vessels. It is capable of operating from both land and water, including sea conditions with wave heights of six to eight feet, thereby enhancing flexibility in maritime missions.

The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime security and disaster management capabilities. Wg Cdr MVN Sai (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of Apogee Aerospace, said the initiative stems from identified operational needs. He noted that engagements with prospective customers over the past two years have highlighted a clear gap that amphibious aviation can fill. In the initial phase, services are expected to require 20 to 30 aircraft to familiarise crews, establish standard operating procedures (SOPs), and develop formal amphibious mission doctrines.
