Water Woes: Thirumangalam's ₹52.54 Crore Project Faces Delays

The ₹52.54-crore drinking water supply scheme for Thirumangalam Municipality has been delayed by five months due to land acquisition hurdles, pushing the completion date from July 2025 to December 2025.

Launched on January 1, 2024, the project aims to address growing demand in Thirumangalam, where 20,000 households currently receive 5.4 million litres per day (MLD) from the Cauvery and Vaigai rivers through two existing schemes.

To boost supply, a new 4.3 MLD source is being developed from the Vaigai River at Mullipallam under the Kalaignar Urban Development Fund. The project includes five overhead tanks, the largest with a capacity of 7 lakh litres, and is designed to sustain demand for the next decade.

Delays occurred because the proposed pumping station and 25 km pipeline route traverse land owned by the Public Works Department (PWD), requiring a no-objection certificate (NOC). The Water Resources Department has since granted approval following submission of the required documents.

Despite the setbacks, municipal officials remain confident the project will be completed by the end of 2025.
