The India Ship Technology Centre was recently inaugurated at the Indian Maritime University (IMU), Visakhapatnam campus, marking a significant step forward for India’s shipbuilding and maritime technology sector. Developed at a cost of ₹305 crore, the centre aims to strengthen the capabilities of the Indian shipbuilding industry and support the nation’s vision for self-reliance in maritime technology.
The inauguration was conducted virtually by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, from IMU’s headquarters in Chennai, during the 10th convocation ceremony of the university.
The centre is envisioned as a shared platform for the shipbuilding ecosystem, offering state-of-the-art facilities, skill development programs, and a collaborative space for ship design, research & development, and marine engineering. “This marks a new chapter in our journey towards Atmanirbharta in ship technology,” said Sonowal during his address.
The minister also highlighted the remarkable progress in India’s ports sector since 2014, citing investments in modernization, infrastructure upgrades, and mechanization. He noted that Indian ports now have an average turnaround time of just 0.9 days, surpassing many advanced maritime nations including the US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and Singapore.
