The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has secured a landmark $60 million (₹498 crore) investment from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, for the Madhurawada Sewerage System Project.
The trust deed was signed by GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and IFC Asia Head Victoria Delmon, in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar.
Madhurawada, home to over 2.5 lakh residents, has faced chronic sanitation issues, with untreated wastewater polluting local water bodies. The ₹553 crore project will be financed through IFC’s non-convertible debentures (₹498 crore), AMRUT 2.0 (₹45.64 crore), and GVMC contributions (₹9.36 crore).
The initiative includes a 400 km sewer network, pumping stations, and a 38 MLD sewage treatment plant, to be developed in phases. The 15-year loan carries an 8.15% interest rate with a 3-year moratorium.
By 2030, the project aims to achieve 100% household sewerage coverage in Madhurawada, benefiting 82,900 families. It is expected to significantly improve public health, enhance climate resilience, generate local employment, and attract further investment in the region.
