VinFast Drives into Thoothukudi: A New Era for Indian EVs

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) major VinFast is set to inaugurate its integrated EV manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, on July 31, with Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expected to preside over the ceremony.

The milestone establishes Thoothukudi as a rising automotive hub, complementing Tamil Nadu’s established clusters in Chennai, Hosur, and Coimbatore. Industries Minister Dr. T. R. B. Rajaa described the launch as a “moment of immense pride” for the state, noting that the project has progressed from MoU to inauguration in just 15 months. “We’ve prioritised long-term, credible investors with strong capital, technology, and job creation goals—VinFast aligns perfectly with that vision,” he said.

Backed by an investment of ₹16,000 crore (USD 2 billion), the facility will create 3,500 jobs and produce 50,000 EVs annually in Phase I. It will serve as the cornerstone for a green industrial and MSME ecosystem in southern Tamil Nadu, supporting high-value employment and fostering advanced technologies.

Industries Secretary Arun Roy highlighted the rapid execution as a testament to Tamil Nadu’s progressive industrial policies and best-in-class investor facilitation. “This project signals the emergence of southern Tamil Nadu as an important industrial growth zone,” he noted.
