Vedanta Aluminium has expanded the capacity of its Lanjigarh refinery in Odisha’s Kalahandi district from two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to five MTPA, setting a new operational benchmark.
The expansion raises India’s total alumina refining capacity to nearly 13 MTPA, positioning the country as the world’s third-largest alumina producer. “Scaling our Lanjigarh operations to five MTPA is both a capacity milestone and a step toward building a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium. He added that the achievement underscores Vedanta’s commitment to responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation for India.
In November, the refinery recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 kilotonnes (KT), an eight percent increase over the previous month and a 68 percent year-on-year growth. The performance was driven by improvements in logistics, cost efficiency, and process optimisation, including handling more than 700 rakes in a single month, achieving the lowest specific power consumption in 20 months, and reducing conversion costs to an 18-month low.
