The runway expansion at Umroi Airport is expected to be completed by 2027, allowing larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 to operate regularly.
The state government has acquired 11 acres of land, with ₹500 crore allocated by the Centre for the project. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed, “The runway extension at Umroi will be ready by 2027.” The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is currently evaluating the tender process, with a joint inspection planned. The final award of the work will follow AAI’s technical evaluation.
The government has also finalised the additional land required for the expansion, a crucial step for smooth project progress. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is coordinating with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on the development of Shillong and Baljek airports alongside Umroi.
