Tripura's Grand Welcome: Heritage Palace Becomes Luxury Destination

On May 20, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced a landmark initiative to convert the historic Pushpabanta Palace into a five-star heritage hotel, in collaboration with the Indian Hotels Company Ltd. (IHCL), part of the Taj Group. The announcement followed the signing of a formal lease agreement between the Tripura government and IHCL.

Originally constructed in 1917 and later serving as the Governor’s House, Pushpabanta Palace will be transformed into a 100-room luxury hotel, featuring four exclusive palace-themed suites. CM Saha described the development as a significant milestone in Tripura’s tourism journey and a realization of the state's long-standing aspiration to welcome globally recognized luxury hospitality brands.

This partnership marks the first of its kind between a state government and IHCL in India. While the Taj Group plans to complete the retrofitting within three years, the state government has urged for an expedited timeline of two years.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities for around 200 locals and position Tripura as a high-end tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers. Spanning 7.78 acres, the venture is poised to drive sustainable, tourism-led economic growth in the region.
