Tiruchirappalli International Airport has proposed a major runway expansion project to extend its existing runway from 8,000 feet to 12,500 feet.
The ₹350 crore proposal has been submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for planning approval. Once completed, the expansion is expected to enable the airport to handle wide-body aircraft and operate long-haul international flights. Airport Director S.S. Raju said preparatory work for the project is already underway, including the construction of a compound wall on newly acquired land.
In parallel, several infrastructure upgrades are in progress at the airport. These include the construction of a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and technical block at a cost of ₹55 crore, which is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. The airport has also commissioned five additional passenger boarding bridges at a cost of ₹14.8 crore, taking the total number to 10.
As part of its sustainability initiatives, Tiruchirappalli International Airport also plans to install an additional one-megawatt solar power plant.
