Thiruvananthapuram is set to implement a ₹133.5 crore solid waste management project under the CITIIS 2.0 initiative, with the goal of achieving zero-garbage status.
The project is jointly funded by the Kerala state government (₹103.7 crore) and the Central government (₹29.8 crore). It will introduce refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plants, recycling stations, and technology-enabled waste handling systems to modernize the city’s waste management infrastructure.
The detailed project report (DPR), prepared by Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), is currently under final evaluation by a panel of national and international experts reviewing its infrastructure and operational strategy.
While final Central approval is expected by November 2025, actual implementation will begin only after the local body elections, with the newly elected council prioritizing rollout by December. The project is expected to be completed within four years, focusing on machinery procurement, infrastructure development, and long-term maintenance contracts.
Site identification for both RDF plants and material collection facilities has been finalized, marking a critical step toward a sustainable and modern waste management system in the Kerala capital.
