Thirsty No More: Hyderabad's ₹7,300 Crore Water Lifeline Begins

In a major step to address Hyderabad’s growing drinking water needs, the Telangana government is set to launch the Godavari Phase II and III project. The ₹7,300 crore initiative will draw 20 TMCFT of water from Mallanna Sagar, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expected to lay the foundation stone at Gandipet within a week.

The project aims to supply water to Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, and the Musi River for both drinking and rejuvenation purposes. Of the total water drawn, 15 TMCFT will be allocated for direct city supply, while 5 TMCFT will be used to rejuvenate local water bodies.

Tenders have been finalized, and two agencies have been awarded contracts for the work. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSB), which currently supplies about 550 MGD across nearly 1,000 sq. km, now operates across a much-expanded jurisdiction covering over 1,450 sq. km, extending to the Outer Ring Road and surrounding villages.

Key components of the project include a raw water pipeline from Mallanna Sagar to Osman Sagar, a sump and pump house at Mallanna Sagar, water treatment plants at Ghanpur, Osman Sagar, and Himayat Sagar, and balancing reservoirs at Ghanpur and Kokapet’s Golden Mile.
