The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has commenced road-laying works as part of the ongoing Sanganoor Canal revamp project, aimed at improving urban infrastructure and restoring the city’s waterways.
Valued at ₹49 crore, the project focuses on removing encroachments, restoring the canal’s original width, and constructing roads on both sides. In the first phase, covering a 2.5 km stretch from Mettupalayam Road to Rathinapuri Bridge, retaining walls have already been completed. Road construction is progressing along a 1.5 km section, with 300 metres already tarred. The plan also includes the installation of streetlights and a steel fence along the new road.
Approximately 250 families displaced due to encroachment removal have been provided with alternative housing. Once completed, the road will function as a one-way corridor to improve traffic flow and connectivity.
Additionally, a proposal for ₹235 crore in supplementary funding has been submitted for the next phase of canal development, which will extend the revamp from Mettupalayam Road through Kannappa Nagar, passing Sathyamangalam Road, Avinashi Road, and Sowripalayam, before connecting to Trichy Road.
