The Power of Progress: Tripura's Railways Go Electric

Tripura’s railway infrastructure received a significant upgrade with the successful commissioning of the Teliamura traction substation in Khowai district, marking a major milestone toward introducing electric train services in the region.

This development is part of the Central Government’s broader push to expand electrified railway connectivity across the country. It follows the recent commissioning of the Udaipur traction substation in Gomati district, further accelerating railway electrification efforts in Tripura.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) plans to gradually phase out diesel locomotives in favor of electric trains, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Officials noted that, beyond enabling electric train operations, the project will also bolster power supply reliability in Teliamura and nearby areas.

“Along with improving rail services, the electrification project is expected to enhance power stability in Teliamura and surrounding communities, benefitting both commuters and residents,” said NFR spokesperson Sabyasachi De.
