Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on February 28, marking a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing drive.
The plant, located near Ahmedabad, was initially expected to commence production by late 2024 but will now begin rolling out high-performance memory and storage chips designed for artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing applications.
Operated by Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt. Ltd., the facility represents an investment of ₹22,516 crore. According to an official statement from the Gujarat government, the project is expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs, including opportunities for Divyang (specially-abled) individuals as operators and technicians. Currently, about 2,000 team members are engaged in preparing the plant for commercial production.
The Sanand ATMP unit will manufacture DRAM and NAND products, including solid-state drives (SSDs), catering to global markets. These components are vital for AI systems, which depend on high-speed memory and storage to process large volumes of data in real time.
Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology, said memory and storage solutions are at the core of modern technological innovation, particularly in the rapidly expanding AI sector. He noted that as AI applications become more advanced and responsive, the demand for cutting-edge memory technologies continues to rise.
