The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved a major healthcare initiative worth ₹3,708 crore, to be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Titled “Strengthening Tertiary Health Care Delivery, Medical Education System and Nursing System in Maharashtra,” the project aims to upgrade healthcare infrastructure, medical education, and nursing facilities across the state.
Key components of the initiative include the establishment of new government medical colleges in Wardha, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Ahilyanagar, along with the upgradation of existing nursing colleges in several districts. Prominent institutions such as GT Hospital and St George’s Hospital in Mumbai are also set to benefit from infrastructure enhancements.
The project will further support the procurement of advanced medical equipment for hospitals in districts including Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Hingoli, and Mumbai, strengthening diagnostic and treatment capabilities. In addition, new nursing colleges will be set up in Baramati, Sangli (Miraj), and Kolhapur to expand the training capacity for healthcare professionals.
Overall, the initiative is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery and medical education in Maharashtra, enhancing access to quality healthcare services across the state.
